In 1968, Columbia Pictures released Frank Perry's The Swimmer, starring Burt Lancaster, Janice Rule and Janet Landgard. Based on a short story by John Cheever, Lancaster plays Ned Merrill, a middle aged Connecticut suburbanite, who shows up out of nowhere at the home of the Westerhazys, old friends from their affluent neighborhood, who are recovering from the previous evening's partying. As he looks across the valley from their backyard, he sees a string of pools forming a river back to his place, and decides he will swim his way home to his family. With each pool, we meet his acquaintances, and learn more about Neddy's past. This is a haunting character study of the neaveau-rich, the status climbers, and their social spheres.
